GMAT AWA寫作template，輕取5分

GMAT的Analyitcal Writing Assessment (AWA)部分，要求考生在30分鐘之內，寫一篇大約400字的5段式的文章（雖然官方沒正式要求，但要取5-6分必備）。如用5–8分鐘審題及起草大綱，就只得22–25分鐘爆400字。對亞洲地區的考生來說，尤為吃力。



迅狐認為，如果擔心趕不及在半小時內想出3大論點、寫出400字，最好的辦法，是準備一個任何題目也可用到的萬用template。一進場，就把背好的「罐頭句式」馬上傾倒出來。

因此，迅狐設計了這個萬用AWA寫作模板template，幫助大家爭取更多時間思考寫作內容 。只要跟著這個template去寫，也不愁寫不出5段式400字英文文章。


開首段落 (introduction):

1. The argument claims/proposes/concludes/recommends/suggests that…

2. To support the claim/conclusion, the author assumes/points out/cites …

3. While it may be compelling at face value/has some merits at first glance,

4. (a) it fails to supply sufficient support in favour of the argument/ (b) it omits/leaves out several key issues/ (c) the conclusion relies on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence


中段(body):

  1. (a) First/Secondly/Finally, the author readily/simply assumes/ proposes/claims/concludes/suggests/recommends/reckons/ believes that… / (b) In a weak attempt to support its claim, the argument describes…
  2. (a) This rests on flawed/dubious/unlikely/questionable/invalid/ groundless assumption/ (b) This is a very/wholly weak/unsupported claim as the argument does not address/ demonstrate…/ (c) The fact that … does not necessarily support the claim
  3. To illustrate,/For instance,/For example,
  4. Therefore,/Hence,/Apparently, the argument is unwarranted/ unsubstantiated/unconvincing at best
  5. (a) To make it sound more appealing/compelling/convincing, the author could…/ (b) If the author had provided evidence that…, the argument would have been a lot more convincing.


結尾 (conclusion):

  1. In conclusion,/ In light of the above, the argument is based on flawed assumptions and thus unsubstantiated/unconvincing/open to debate/ not sound/ misleading,
  2. and it can be considerably strengthed/reinforced/enhanced/ more thorough if the aforementioned/ above concerns are addressed/discussed/taken into account.

GMAT 全名為 G raduate M anagement A dmission T est。本地及海外的頂尖碩士/研究生課程，幾乎都需求GMAT/ GRE考試達到一定的分數。以香港科技大學(HKUST)為例，報讀其full-time MSC in Finance就必須提交GMAT或GRE的成績。一般而言，商學院較看重GMAT。因為GMAT考試設計本身就是專為商學院而設，連官網也直接叫做 www.mba.com 。 GMAT總分是800分。全球頂尖商學院學生的平均GMAT分數，一般在710以上。 不少考生把目標定在700分以上。不過，事實上，2/3的考生也考不到600分以上。 那麼，如果想報考優秀商學院，我可以像考IELTS一樣，不斷重刷直至考到想要的分數嗎？ 不行。GMAT規定，12個月內最多只能考5次，每次至少相隔16日。最重要的是， 每人一生只可考8次 ！ 因此，必須好好備戰，不要浪費每一次機會！                     GMAT一共考3個小時零7分鐘，考試分為4個部分，主要考核學生的邏輯分析、數學及語文能力。 總分800分是由Verbal和Quantitative兩個部分計算出來的 ，一考完 即時知道分數 。 AWA和Intergrated Reasoning分數會單獨列出在成績單上。AWA在收到正式report時才知道分數。雖然不計在800分，但MBA、法律、文科等看重學生語文水平及邏輯能力，因此同樣不容忽視。 （一）分析性寫作(AWA)：30分鐘，寫一篇大約400–500字文章（其實官方沒說明字數要求，但字數太少難以展現structure及lexical resource）。6分滿分。 題目是一篇100字左右的（看起來合理，但必然有誤的）argument。你的任務是寫一篇文章去分析其謬誤（flaws）。 時間分配好重要！迅狐建議 ， 先用5–10分鐘，用技巧找出最少3個logical flaws，定下寫作大綱(5段式：開頭->3個flaws->結尾)， 把已預備好的開頭結尾萬能句型馬上打出來。 餘下20分鐘，大量運用百搭句型及vocab。最後給自己3分鐘檢查全文，清除spelling和grammatical mistakes。要取5.5至6分，其實不難。   延伸閱讀： 英文寫作必備Paraphrasing技巧 英文作文考試

【IELTS雅思8分】Speaking技巧 — 百搭的「罐頭答案」

上一篇 提到，如果本身英文水準一般，即場發揮容易失準。 迅狐建議，準備一些 百搭的「罐頭答案」 吧。不論問題是什麼，都可以隨手開個罐頭，套入去答，再加些 native speakers常用的linking words ，那就perfect了 。 「罐頭答案」可以關於喜歡的地方、書、電影、敬愛的人、難忘的往事、生活群組等。構思時，嘗試套入最少3個topic答都答到。示範一下： 例一、罐頭答案（生活群組）： (Hongkongers) might seem like too busy to  socalise  as they are living among the  hustle and bustle of the city . But if you get to know them, you’ll find most of them are actually  pretty  friendly and helpful. 基本上，只要題目涉及「生活群組」，就可以融入（自行微調啦） Relevant topics: [Hometown] What are the people like in your hometown?
